Are you interested in Computational Biology, Genome-scale biology, or Bioinformatics research? The University of Toronto has many options for you. Genome-scale research spans many disciplines, thus many departments are involved in educational efforts. There is no single Department of Bioinformatics or of Computational Biology.
For Graduate Students
The Collaborative Specialization in Genome Biology and Bioinformatics. Students register in a home PhD program in one of the affiliated departments and then join the CSGBB. This designation appears on one's PhD transcript, and there's an official certificate indicating participation in the specialization.
Department of Molecular Genetics. One of the main biology departments admitting computational biology students. Research is traditionally focused on animal model organisms and human disease. Masters and PhD programs are available starting September or January. There is a Computational Biology Track available in the context of a PhD program.
Department of Cell & Systems Biology. One of the main biology departments admitting computational biology students. Research is traditionally focused on plant, animal and microbial model organisms and evolution.
Department of Biochemistry. Admits computational biology students to a few labs. Research is traditionally focused on biochemistry, structural biology and cell biology.
Department of Medical Biophysics. Admits computational biology students to a several labs and there's a Bioinformatics Group, with more hires planned. Research is traditionally focused on cell biology, cancer, structural biology and medical imaging.
Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology. Admits computational biology students to a few labs. Research is traditionally focused on ecology and evolution.
The Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering. An institute involving multiple engineering departments with research focusing on neural and sensory system engineering, biomaterials, nanotechnology and clinical applications. Admits computational biology students to a few labs.
Other departments are available that may admit computational biology students, such as the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry, the Institute of Medical Science and the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology.
For Undergraduate Students
Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Undergraduate Specialist Program. This is an exciting undergraduate specialist program, with elements from both the computational and biological sciences. An alternate to this program is to do a double major in Computer Science and Biology.
